Medical Considerations
Special Health Conditions:
Please supply information concerning any health condition which might affect your participation in conference programs and/or which would help us to provide proper care in case of an emergency. Include names, specific medical conditions, allergies, continuing medication, etc.
Chronic Medical Conditions:
Individuals with chronic medical conditions should consult their physicians since no special facilities or equipment are available on island. We will accept registrations from mobility-impaired individuals providing they are self-sufficient. If you have a condition that affects walking ability, inform the conference registrar or chairperson so they may assist you in planning your stay, or contact them with other questions/concerns you may have about our ability to accommodate your needs.
Pregnant Women:
If you are pregnant, you should seek your doctor's advice and notify the conference chairs of your condition if you do attend. If you will be in the final three weeks of pregnancy at the time of the conference, we ask that you delay your visit to Star Island until next year.
Medical Emergencies:
Star Island is a 10 mile boat ride from Portsmouth. Due to recent security measures instituted at the naval base in Portsmouth, the Coast Guard is not able to respond as quickly as they have in the past to medical emergencies at the Isles of Shoals. Therefore, it is likely that even in cases of utmost urgency, it will take approximately two hours to evacuate to the nearest hospital emergency room. Unfortunately, there is no accommodation for helicopter service.
