Welcome to Powakka North
Women's Group web site for small business enterprises in Suriname, South
America. Located just south of Paranam in Suriname's interior, Powakka North is a small Amerindian village of only 100 people. The women in the village have teamed up to learn craft and small business skills to earn a livable income for their families. Training came from Peace Corps volunteers and grants for start up equipment and supplies, and training (including sewing, machine maintenance/repair, business skills, and computer use) came from grants Peace Corps administered through USAID. How can you help? This site was developed 1.) to showcase the hard work and pride these women take in their skills training and work in an under-developed interior village in Suriname, and 2.) to provide a global storefront from which to sell their products. All the money goes to the women doing the work. You are paying only for their hard and detailed work, the cost of shipping, handling, materials, and continued training. Buy a quilt, and you will be supporting women in small business trade. Products - Our product list was just updated! (updated April 2005) The nationally respected women of Powakka North have offered an entire product line of beautiful crafts for more than five years. Of course their quilts are their signature craft. Each craft is made by the women of Powakka North using hand or foot powered treadle machines in their homes. The quilts are made with cottons and cotton blends with a medium weight polyester fiberfill batting placed in the middle layer for warmth (making these quilts good for winter use). The quilts are then hand tied at the corners of each individual square with a cotton thread to secure all 3 layers together. One baby/lap quilt contains 165 individual squares!
